Story plot of malayalam film Kumbalangi Nights
Saji, Bony, Bobby, and Frankie are four brothers living in a small, cramped house in the wasteland area of Kumbalangi. Saji has anger issues and often fights with Bobby, and Frankie is ashamed of them as a result. Frankie doesn’t invite his friends home because he doesn’t like the way he and his family live, but he gets along well with his second brother, Bony, who is mute.
Bobby is a loafer, but tries to improve his job prospects to win over the family of Baby, his girlfriend, as she comes from a well-to-do background. He and Saji reconcile, and Saji goes to ask Baby’s brother-in-law Shammy’s permission for Bobby and Baby to get married. However Shammy humiliates them, and displays slightly antisocial aspects of his character.
Meanwhile, Bony falls in love with an American tourist Nyla, and the two of them spend a night together in the home stay owned by Baby’s family. Shammy spies on them through the gaps in the wall, and kicks them out. Nyla moves in with Bony, much to Bobby’s horror, as he is trying to make their family more respectable in order to improve his prospects with Baby.
Saji has an argument with his best friend Vijay from Tamil Nadu after he fights with his brothers, and tries to hang himself. Vijay saves his life by climbing on the roof and breaking part of it, but ends up falling and getting crushed under the roof debris. Out of guilt, Saji starts to take care of his Vijay’s wife and child, and brings them to stay in his house. Frankie is very happy to have women in the house, as it made them seem like a normal family.
It is revealed that Saji’s father married Bony’s mother, and gave birth to Bobby and Frankie. Their father died, and the mother left her children to take up the path of God, leaving Saji to be their father figure. The brothers visit their mother to ask her help for Bobby and Baby’s marriage, but she seems unfocused, and refuses to come home. The boys are forced to accept that their mother is ill, and can never truly be a mother to them. Saji visits a psychologist and vents all his sadness about his parents, and feels better. Meanwhile, Bobby quits the more respectable job he had taken up to impress Baby’s family, but surprisingly Baby has absolutely no problem with it, and encourages him to follow his true talent and be a fisherman.
The family gets a bad reputation due to unmarried women living with the brothers, and Shammy declines Bobby’s proposal for Baby. Baby makes up her mind to elope with Bobby, but when her sister Simi confides in her husband Shammy, he turns abusive. It becomes clear from his behaviour that he has some sort of mental illness and behavioural problems, which make him manipulative and controlling.
Bobby gets worried when he can’t reach Baby on her mobile, and goes to her house with his brothers to investigate. Shammy knocks him out and tries to dispose of the evidence, but the other three brothers burst in and subdue Shammy by tying him up in a fishing net. When Bobby regains consciousness, he finds Baby, Simi, and their mother injured and tied up under the bed. He releases them and comforts Baby in his arms. They are all shocked by Shammy’s true character.
Finally, Baby and Bobby get married, and Baby also moves into their house, making their family even bigger and happier. She had avoided much physical contact with Bobby till they got married, and while they shyly discussed whether they should get started, Bobby’s brothers slide a packet of condoms under the door, telling them jokingly that the family is already huge, and not to crowd the house further.
